Bloom Physical Therapy specializes in treatment of concussion, including acute concussion injuries, and persistent post-concussion syndrome.
A concussion is defined as a mild traumatic brain injury, causing physiological disruption in brain activities with no apparent structural damage on imaging.
What does this actually mean? A concussion causes dysfunction on a cellular, metabolic, and physiological level. This means that it cannot be seen on standard imaging like X-rays or MRI. However, it's important to note that even though a concussion is considered to be a "mild" traumatic brain injury... it's effect on your function and life can be much more than mild.
A multi- system assessment can help to tease out specific areas of dysfunction and set you on the path to recovery. No matter how long it's been since injury, you can still see improvement.
A concussion can affect many different systems, that's why a multisystem approach to assessment and treatment is a priority.
All evaluations include assessment of the vestibular system (which is a common cause for symptoms like dizziness), the neck, the visual system, the autonomic system (the part of your nervous system that deals with your stress response, and also controls things like blood flow, heart rate, blood pressure), the somatosensory system (your sensory system), and a balance and coordination assessment.
This allows your therapist to fully understand what's going on in your body and allows them to create a unique and individualized treatment plan.
No two individuals with a concussion injury present exactly the same way. We believe it's imperative to provide individualized care that's evidence based and specifically designed for you. This means that you won't be given a cookie cutter exercise program that leaves you feeling worse. Our one-on-one treatment model allows your therapist to reassess and adjust your plan at any time to meet your needs.
